Diabetes Management

Diabetes is a condition where your body has trouble keeping your blood sugar (glucose) at a healthy level. This happens because it either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar (glucose) from your blood into your cells, where it’s used for energy. Without enough insulin working properly, sugar builds up in your blood, which can lead to health problems over time. Diabetes is diagnosed by a doctor.

Common symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, constant hunger, tiredness, and blurred vision. Some people may also experience slow-healing cuts or frequent infections. Symptoms can develop gradually and may be mild at first, so regular health checks are important for early detection.

The NDSS offers eligible individuals access to subsidised diabetes products such as:

• Needles and syringes
• Blood glucose test strips
• Urine test strips

Registration is free, and once completed in conjunction with your GP or specialist, you’ll receive an NDSS card to access these products at participating pharmacies, including United Chemists.

To be eligible for a free Diabetes MedsCheck you must:

• Have recently diagnosed or less than ideally controlled Type 2 diabetes
• Hold a Medicare or DVA card
• Live at home (not in a care facility)
• Haven’t had a MedsCheck, Diabetes MedsCheck, or Home Medicine Review in the past 12 months
• Have limited access to diabetes education or support services

While we may not be able to offer a comprehensive review, our pharmacists are always available to answer questions about your medication(s) – no appointment necessary.

• A private appointment with the Pharmacist
• A review of your current diabetes medications and how you take them
• Education on proper use of blood glucose monitors
• Guidance on self-management and lifestyle support
• A copy of your personalised medication action plan

A blood glucose test measures the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It helps identify if you may be at risk of diabetes. While this test doesn’t confirm a diagnosis, it can indicate whether further testing with your GP is recommended.

This service is quick, easy, and does not require fasting.

• A team member will collect a small blood sample from your fingertip.
• The sample is applied to a testing strip, and your current blood sugar level is measured.
• You’ll receive your result on the spot and have the opportunity to discuss what it means with the Pharmacist.
• If your levels are outside the normal range, we’ll recommend follow-up with your GP.
• We can also screen for any risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the next 5 years using a quick and verified questionnaire.
